What Causes Dark Circles Around the Eyes - How Do You Get Rid of Them?

by PRIORI Skincare on Nov 05 2019
We’ve all been there - that moment when you look at yourself in the mirror first thing in the morning, and you find dark circles under your eyes staring back at you. “But I got a good night sleep!,” you think to yourself. While fatigue is a cause of this beauty woe, there are actually many different factors that go into the how and why dark circles form and who gets them. But the main factor isn’t lack of sleep, it’s actually genetics (thanks, Mom!) Depending on your skin color, those pesky circles are caused by different things. If you’re fair skinned and your dark circles appear blueish or greenish, that’s caused by blood vessels constricting due to inflammation, resulting in blood pooling in the area. If your circles are more reddish or brownish, those would be hyper pigmentation, and are more common in those with darker skin. No matter the skin color, the skin under our eyes thins as we age, making any sort of blood hiding underneath appear darker. We all love to blame our mothers for our beauty misfortunes, but this time, it might actually be her genetics that have made you a dark circle sufferer! If she or your grandmother, had to deal with them, more than likely you will follow suit. And if it’s not hereditary, there are still factors like your diet, allergies, fatigue, and even your screen time that might cause them to flare up. That said, don’t panic because there are many ways to help diminish their appearance! We’ve rounded up some of Priori’s best products to make dark circles a thing of your past.   Vitamin C Products high in Vitamin C can help assist with collagen production, and sort of “wake up” the undereye area. Here’s a tip: keep your eye serums in the fridge to get a cooling sensation upon application - this will also help constrict the blood vessels faster for near immediate improving results! We recommend: Priori LCA fx310 Eye Serum   Lightening Products For those suffering circles from hyper pigmentation, a lightening eye serum can assist in the evening production of melanin in the skin, thereby gradually lightening the overall area. We recommend: Priori TTC fx330 Tightening Eye Serum SPF It should come as no surprise that sun exposure can cause hyper pigmentation, but the small undereye region is often overlooked in terms of protection. Don’t forget to dab some SPF there (and everywhere) each morning! We recommend: Priori Tetra fx250 Broad Spectrum SPF 50 Sunscreen     Retinoid For those suffering from dark circles due to aging, a retinol will increase collagen as well as reduce the transparency of aged skin, fading away the circles over time. We recommend: Priori DNA Eye Recovery Cream with Retinol       Makeup Last, but definitely not least, there’s always foundation & concealer to mask and conceal those circles! Be sure to use all-natural or mineral products as to not further bother sensitive skin. Given the tender nature of the eyes, always take extra care when removing makeup, as well. Using a foundation with additional SPF around this delicate eye area is a huge bonus! We recommend: Priori Mineral Skincare Powder SPF 25

The Newest “PF” That Needs To Be On Your Radar: Genetic Protection Factor

by PRIORI Skincare on Sep 12 2019
We all know SPF (Sun Protection Factor) and how it’s the crucial part of your sunscreen. But there’s a new PF in town, and it’s the Priori exclusive GPF, or Genetic Protection Factor, and like the name implies, it’s all about protecting your genes, or DNA. So, what exactly should we be protecting our genes against, and what makes it different than SPF? We’ll break it down for you. What should we be protecting our genetics from? The short answer is all different types of light and free radicals. That might sound simple, but it’s astonishing how many types of light there actually are, and the damage that can be done. We discussed the basics of different light in this blog post, but here’s the lowdown. Light consists of the following: physical (whether that’s real light outside or artificial inside), blue light (HEV or High Energy Visible light), and infrared. All of these penetrate the skin at different levels, causing a variety of damage. UVA hits the skin deep enough to cause DNA oxidation, but visible light and infrared hit the deepest to cause the most destruction in the form of free radical formation and premature skin aging. More than half of the energy the sun emits is infrared! Everything that SPF protects against, it’s not enough to protect your DNA. In this modern age with technology and urban living, our genetic defense struggles to keep up with the constant attack. Sunscreen only stops approximately 45-55% of free radicals from entering our systems. Some other free radicals can come from the inside with things like stress, something we all have to deal with. So, what does GPF do exactly? It protects against all that SPF protects against, and then some. Pollution Infrared HEV Blue Light Free Radicals DNA Damage Physical light While the concept of genetic protection is nothing new to Priori - we’ve had DNA Repair Enzymes in some of our products from the beginning - this new range has a little extra something. We have developed a new ingredient to block out the hardest thing to protect the skin from, HEV or blue light, an antioxidant called Soliberine. Derived from a plant called Buddleja officinalis, or the Butterfly Bush, it works to specifically guard the skin from 45% of the free radicals caused by our electronics (psst, we see that blue light all over you right now as you read this). But that’s not all! Studies show that is also cause increase production of elastin, limit inflammation, and inhibit hyperpigmentation caused by UV rays. We will be relaunching the original GPF products, plus introducing two more soon, and we are so excited for you to get your hands on them!

The Top 5 Antioxidants for Your Skin

by PRIORI Skincare on Sep 05 2019
We all know that antioxidants are good for our bodies, because they’re found in healthy foods. But in recent years, they’ve been used more and more in skincare, because the benefits when applied topically, are completely different. So, what do antioxidants do for the skin? An antioxidant is a naturally occurring vitamin or mineral that protects your skin against damaging free radicals (smog, UV rays, basically all the bad stuff the environment attacks us with every day, etc). This in turn causes the collagen in your face to stop replenishing and breaks down your DNA, making you look older. But, let’s get real, no one antioxidant can do it all. So here is our list of the top five that are best for your skin. Coenzyme Q10 That’s CoQ10 to us! It is found naturally in the human body, so there’s already some resident in your cells right now. Knowing that it is crucial for cellular energy production and protects from heart damage on the inside of your body, research was done to see what benefits it had when applied topically. It was found to have the ability to penetrate deep into the skin’s epidermis for long lasting results, and can fight against oxidative stress, which can cause DNA damage, increasing the risk for cancer. Younger looking skin and an overall healthier you? Sign us up! Recommended Priori product: Q+SOD fx220 - Brightening Serum Super Oxide Dismutase Super Oxide Dismutase or SOD as we call it in the skincare world, is known for neutralizing the superoxide free radical, which is the most harmful type of free radical found in the body. You’ll most likely find this antioxidant in products that claim to fight the signs of aging, but it really is one of the most crucial antioxidants on the market for those of all ages. There’s a reason ‘super’ is in the name - it has the ability to enhance the power of sunscreen (um, genius?). Recommended Priori product: Q+ SOD fx240 - Moisturizing Cream   All the Vitamins (A, C, and E) We know, this is technically cheating, but there is a reason why so many products have more than one of these in it - they work better together. All are antioxidants, but they each also have individual little miracles they perform daily. Vitamin A is best for smoothing fine lines and wrinkles due to containing retinal, Vitamin C brightens, and Vitamin E moisturizes. Vitamins C and E work best when combined, but use caution when combining A with C if you have sensitive skin. Recommended Priori product: LCA fx140 - Barrier Restore Complex Curcumin We recently did a whole post on the benefits of turmeric (click here for a refresher), and since curcumin is what gives turmeric all of its powers, of course it had to make this list. Antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial - it basically has magical powers. It’s very potent and helps against UV damage. This spice has been known to protect and heal many a skin woes, so just add it to your skincare shelf and thank us later. Recommended Priori product: TTC fx320 - Illumination Treatment Flavonoids You’re probably getting a fair share of these bad boys from all the colorful fruits and veggies you eat, but topically it’s a whole different ballgame. Derived from plants, flavonoids are what protect the plants from environmental stressors, and has the same effect on us! While there are well over 4,000 identifiable flavonoids, two of the most common and effective in skincare are grape seed and green tea extract. Grace seeds contain vitamins C and E so it’s a win-win, and green tea fights against DNA damage, lowering your risk for skin cancer. Both have proved to work wonders for the skin in terms of stabilizing collagen and strengthening blood vessels. Recommended Priori product: TTC fx310 Naturally Enriched Cleanser
Why Lactic Acid is the Superior AHA | Priori Blog

Lactic Acid - The Superior AHA

by PRIORI Skincare on Jul 16 2019
By now, most people are aware that they need a decent cleanser, a trusty serum, and a hydrating moisturizer to get their beauty routine on the right track. But there are still those out there who don’t know the benefits of a chemical exfoliator like an AHA (alpha hydroxy acid). Physical exfoliators like a facial brush or those harmful microbeads slough off dead skin while potentially scratching the surface. AHAs help to gently peel away dead cells to unveil a new, glowing layer, while also moisturizing by signaling skin cells to increase their hyaluronic acid deposition, hydrating the skin from the inside out. Water-soluble organic acids derived from fruit or other kinds of food, glycolic, lactic and citrus are among the most popular types of AHAs. But new research has suggested that lactic acid is the superior AHA choice as it’s the human body’s natural cell-signaling moisturizing agent. Lactic acid comes from lactose found in milk, and it’s one of the gentler acids while being the most moisturizing, making it the premier choice for those with sensitive or aging skin. Cell renewal slows down as we age, leaving behind dull, coarse skin that makes us look older. Lactic acid helps speed up the cell growth process while increasing hyaluronic acid, making skin appear thicker and plumper with natural hydration. This, in turn, helps fill fine lines and wrinkles. Exfoliation helps with hyper pigmentation as lactic acid dissolves bonds that hold dead skin cells together, allowing them to break down in order to restore a more youthful glow to the skin. The scientists behind Priori found in their studies that increasing the pH level of lactic acid has a huge effect on skin sensitivity and irritation. If AHA products are formulated at pH 3.5 or greater they produce very little skin irritation, so by raising pH levels to a minimum of 3.8 in our products, we are able to deliver higher concentrations of AHA for the most dramatic benefits. Our LCA complex line provides a buffered concentration of lactic acid, mixed with vitamins A, C, E, and Pro A (we call this mix the Multi-Functional Antioxidant Sequence, or MFAS). The combination of the lactic acid with the MFAS leads to normalized skin function, with emphasis on hydration and increased cell turnover speed. This mix is also time released and additionally protects against oxidative stress caused by free radicals, making it a truly adapting complex. I know this all may be just a bit intimidating, but remember this: the best way to incorporate an AHA like lactic acid into your skincare routine is to start with small concentrations and work your way up. A great starting product is our LCA fx140 Barrier Restore Complex, with only a 2% concentration that is safe to use as a moisturizer everyday. Pro Tip: Especially as we are approaching the hottest months, be sure to wear sunscreen after using any product with lactic acid as it makes skin more vulnerable to sun damage. While AHA repairs damage from the UV rays, you risk cancelling out the benefits by causing more damage when skin goes unprotected.

What Does “Skin Protection” Really Mean?

by PRIORI Skincare on Jul 16 2019
When you guys think of skin protection, sunscreen is probably the first thing that comes to mind. At least it should have been. But with all the science that has been developed over the past five years or so, we know it is so much more than applying a simple sunscreen and going about your business. Think about it this way…. we always knew that pollution was bad for our lungs and bodies, but now we know that it’s worse than that; it causes free radicals that can prematurely age our skin by decreasing collagen production and increasing pigmentation. While some of us might remember teenage years filled with summers lathering our bodies in baby oil for a nice tan, we now know that it was extremely damaging. Protecting your skin now includes shielding it from the sun, harmful pollution, the radiation from all the different screens we access and, as we need it, stress. Naturally, skin protection during the summer is a whole different ballgame - the days are longer and the sun is stronger. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States with one in five Americans being diagnosed during their lifetime. What was once “protect yourself from the sun’s damaging rays with SPF” evolved to “limit your time in the sun between the hours of 10am and 4pm”, which has now evolved even further to “wear sunscreen every single day or die” (well, not exactly, but that’s what it feels like to me). So, what exactly does it take to protect our skin from all these daily ailments, and is sunscreen itself enough, regardless of the SPF rating? The sun is much more than the light we can actually see. Sunlight can be broken down into four basic categories: VL (visible light), HEV (high-energy visible light), UV (ultraviolet), and IR (infrared light). Visible light is the light that is picked up by the human eye so, in this case, simple sunshine. When we see this, we know we need to protect our skin, by either applying sunscreen or simply covering our skin. HEV refers to blue light, both from the sun and from electronic devices. UV takes into consideration both UVA (rays that go deep into skin to cause premature aging and wrinkles) and UVB (the rays that cause a burn), which most basic sunscreen can block. While you may have read the term Infrared used in a positive way, as it can decrease inflammation and detoxify the skin and body, it can also be harmful when encountered in large frequencies. If you think about it, trapped infrared radiation, aka the heat that we feel, is what is leading to global warming, and if it can wreak havoc on the environment, just imagine what it could do to your skin! So, while we know that finding a natural, mineral-based sunscreen is essential to skin protection, the answer is no, it’s not enough to truly protect our skin. Let’s go back to pollution and stress. Smog and the other human being-produced gunk that is constantly in the air we breathe is full of free radicals that break down our DNA until it can no longer replicate, causing serious skin damage. Now, free radicals are actually made in our body, but so are antioxidants, the remedy, that prevent the radicals from damaging your healthy cells. While your body can normally handle the naturally occurring free radicals it produces, the mass amount coming from pollution and radiation as of late are too overpowering. These unstable molecules are searching for electrons in your body to make them whole again, a process that causes oxidative stress, which is what allows the DNA to start breaking down. You can eat antioxidant-rich food to fix the radicals inside your body, but the skin needs a topical solution. Skincare products rich in antioxidants like Vitamin C and turmeric provide a protecting layer against free radicals made by the environment, and are most effective when used morning and night. Just an FYI, most sunscreens do not contain antioxidants. As a skincare company based on science, Priori is adamant on not only protecting your skin no matter the time of year, but nourishing it as well. Our difference is that our technology protects and repairs while adapting to your specific skin needs. The body comes with its own enzymes to repair DNA damage, but again, all the environmental and stress factors are breaking them down too quickly for our bodies to naturally keep up. One of the most crucial ingredients our products contain is the DNA Enzyme Complex. A natural mix of blue and green algae, microbe and mustard seed extract, this mimics our skin’s DNA enzymes, allowing to assist in the natural repair process while preventing further damage. Now, we said that sunscreen is not enough. But what if we told you there was a product that had all of the ingredients necessary to really protect your skin from these stressors? Look no further than Priori’s Tetra. The first and only one of its kind on the market, this sunscreen provides four levels of protection: UVA and UVB, free radicals, high intensity radiation (the blue light from electronics), and even stress using DNA enzymes. Does your sunscreen do all that? Here’s a hint: it doesn’t, but it should.

The End of Anti Aging

by PRIORI Skincare on Jul 16 2019
By definition, “anti aging” refers to a product or technique that is designed to prevent the appearance of getting older. Such products claim to work with the promise to fill fine lines and wrinkles, eliminate dark spots, and promote healthy cell renewal. But what doesn’t work?
