SPF Is Not Enough
Until now, the only form of topical skin protection was sunscreen. Sunscreens are helpful in shielding skin from the sun’s ultraviolet radiation by absorbing, scattering, blocking or reflecting UV light before it can generate toxic free radicals. The level of protection provided by a sunscreen is defined as its Sun Protection Factor or SPF. But no sunscreen is 100% effective at blocking UV light so some damaging rays still penetrate the SPF shield, and SPF does not prevent any other external sources of oxidative stress from causing damage. For example, sunscreens are useless for preventing smoker’s lines, wrinkles caused by the oxidative stress generated from cigarette smoking, even secondary smoke!
